Memphis (Egypt) As the administrative and religious center of Egypt during the Old Kingdom, Memphis, was not only extraordinarily cosmopolitan, but one of the most prominent cities in the ancient world. Originally the city had many grand temples, palaces and splendid gardens. Although little is left of the ancient city today, visitors still find beauty in the marvelous gardens, colossal monuments, and ancient ruins that continue to fascinate visitors and egyptologist, alike. Of special interest to history lovers is the Colossus of Ramesses II, now located in a small museum near the temple of Ptah. |
